I’ve had a rough week. Family issues, stressful work conditions, nagging allergies- anything that could have gone wrong did. My mind was congested with every possible thing, and today at work I found myself staring out the window instead of tackling the stack of stuff to do on my desk. Not good. The last thing I needed was to lose my full time gig on top of everything else.
I knew had to step away to gain some clarity, so I went outside to check the mailbox. Upon my first step out the door Mr. Sun sweetly greeted me with a warm kiss and the cool summer breeze embraced me. Lightbulb! A little time outside would be the perfect decongestant. I immediately prescribed a plan for myself.
When I got home I went straight to my room and changed into my workout clothes. Nothing abnormal there. I do this 4 times a week after work. The difference was where I was headed. Normally, I head out to the gym or into the living room for some exercise. Today I told my son he could play at his friend’s house (normally he has to go to the gym with me or hang out on the porch). I let the parents know I’d be going to workout and gave the time Andrew needed to be home. Then I set out on a little adventure.
I went for a run! Outside! I hate running. I really do. My body jiggles and I feel like the earth shakes in unison every time my foot hits the ground. I really don’t even dig cardio in general, unless its a form of dance (which I’m sure doesn’t count because it’s fun). Today was different. The universe was magically in tune with my needs. The weather was perfect, the neighborhood was quiet.
I jogged from my house, down and around the lake, then home again. It was the longest I’d run in a long time. And it was exactly what I needed. My head is clearer. My body is stronger. And my soul is calmer. Proof that the simple things in life, and stepping (or running) out of your comfort zone really can make all the difference. I encourage everyone, when in need, to step back, get out of your comfort zone, and take a breather. You’ll be the better for it.
